The discovery of significant ancient Celtic inscriptions in Spain, together with the remarkable advances made in recent decades in the study of the peoples, history, archaeology, and languages of the Iberian Peninsula in Antiquity, have made the Iberian dimension of Celtic Studies unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps the first name that comes to mind when linking Salamanca with this field is that of Antonio Tovar, former Rector of the University and a highly productive scholar in this and other areas. A congress on toponymy held in 1954 and the supervision of several doctoral theses\u2014among them those of M. Palomar Lapesa, J. Rubio Alija, and M\u00aa Lourdes Albertos Firmat\u2014followed in the scholarly tradition of earlier Spanish authorities such as M. G\u00f3mez Moreno, R. Men\u00e9ndez Pidal, and Luis (Koldo) Mitxelena<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u00bb2_5,3_5&#8243; _builder_version=\u00bb4.26.0&#8243; _module_preset=\u00bbdefault\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00bb{}\u00bb][et_pb_column type=\u00bb2_5&#8243; _builder_version=\u00bb4.26.0&#8243; _module_preset=\u00bbdefault\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00bb{}\u00bb][et_pb_image src=\u00bbhttps:\/\/internationalcelticcongresssalamanca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Imagen5.png\u00bb title_text=\u00bbImagen5&#8243; align=\u00bbcenter\u00bb force_fullwidth=\u00bbon\u00bb _builder_version=\u00bb4.26.0&#8243; _module_preset=\u00bbdefault\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00bb{}\u00bb][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\u00bb3_5&#8243; _builder_version=\u00bb4.26.0&#8243; _module_preset=\u00bbdefault\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00bb{}\u00bb][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00bb4.26.0&#8243; _module_preset=\u00bbdefault\u00bb text_text_color=\u00bb#000000&#8243; text_font_size=\u00bb18px\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00bb{}\u00bb]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>In 1974, inspired by the discovery of the first Botorrita Bronze, the then Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, the prehistorian Francisco Jord\u00e1, joined forces with two other professors from Salamanca, Luis Mitxelena and Javier de Hoz, to organise the first <em>Colloquium on Palaeo-Hispanic Languages and Cultures<\/em>, thereby inaugurating a highly productive and influential series of meetings. They were supported externally by scholars such as E. Hamp, K. H. Schmidt, J. Corominas, A. Tovar (then in T\u00fcbingen), J. Untermann, and F. Rodr\u00edguez Adrados. Twenty-five years later, in 1999, Salamanca again hosted the <em>VIII Colloquium<\/em>, organised by Professor Villar with the assistance of Pilar Fern\u00e1ndez, Juan Luis Garc\u00eda Alonso, Blanca M. Pr\u00f3sper, and M\u00aa Dolores Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n<p>To date, fifteen <em>Colloquia on Palaeo-Hispanic Languages and Cultures<\/em> have been held. The proceedings of half of these meetings (seven volumes) have been published in Salamanca: Salamanca 1974 (<em>Salamanca<\/em>, 1976), T\u00fcbingen 1976 (<em>Salamanca<\/em>, 1979), Lisbon 1980 (<em>Salamanca<\/em>, 1985), Cologne 1989 (<em>Salamanca<\/em>, 1993), Coimbra 1994 (<em>Salamanca<\/em>, 1995), Zaragoza 1997 (<em>Salamanca<\/em>, 1999), and Salamanca 1999 <span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">(<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Salamanca<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, 2001). Later colloquia were held in Barcelona 2004 (Barcelona\u2013Zaragoza 2006), Lisbon 2009 (Zaragoza 2009), Valencia 2012 (Zaragoza 2013), Giessen 2016 (Zaragoza 2017), Loul\u00e9\u2013Amod\u00f4var 2019 (Zaragoza 2021), Bordeaux\u2014held online due to COVID-19\u2014in 2021 (Zaragoza 2023) and Madrid in 2024 (Zaragoza 2025).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CELTIC STUDIES in Salamanca A Point of Reference for Celtic Studies and the Study of Pre-Roman Languages and Cultures of Ancient Hispania The importance of the Spanish Celts within the field of Celtic Studies cannot be overstated.
